here is one of mitt romney's high points in the debate. let's look how it dialed. >> my priority is putting people back to work in america. they're suffering in this country. we talk about evidence. look at the evidence of the last four years! it's absolutely extraordinary. we've got 23 million people out of work or stopped looking for work in this country. when the president took office 32 million people on food stamps, 47 million on food stamps today. economic growth this year, slower than last year and last year, slower than the year before. going forward with the status quo is not going to cut it for the american people who are struggling today. >> tell me, why was mitt romney? >> he said trickle down government instead of trickle down on supply side economics, which was an interesting point that i had never heard before. >> somebody else? >> been there, done that. >> explain it. >> he's run companies. he knows how to start these companies and make them work. >> putting people back to work comes down to good, pure leadership which came

governor romney dominated the debates, almost all the debates. people said, well, they weren't one-on-one. mostly they were. in the debates that mattered. he was one-on-one with rick perry and one-on-one with santorum. and the moderators treated it that way. he is underrated. his performance skills is underrated hen he has time to prepare. we'll see what happens in the next few weeks. the president will be under pressure. >> what now? what does the romney campaign do with this? >> i have a list of sort of what now questions up on the page. let's see how big the crowds are. let's see if the press has a bit of a a love affair with him. let's see if he can take the skills and the level of performance he had and translate it to interview and add on the stump. let's see if democrats start to panic. and let's see if chicago decides in the next 24 or 48 hours to say we need to turn the page with something new. another video or some other thing. but personal and performance matters. if governor romney can sustain his performance the president faces a lot

but on style, it's clear that romney won this debate. he seemed to be more aggressive, just what he needed to do. and i think obama actually did well on substance but i think he was actually employing something sort of a defense. he wasn't trying to gain. he was just trying to not harm himself. i don't know if that is a good thing or bad thing. romney needed to do something. he did what he needed to do. i don't know if that is enough to win the election. >> there is a lot of debate online about why the president never invoked the 47% video. some speculate maybe he is trying to keep aces in his pocket. did that surprise you? >> well, what surprised me is there is very little talk about the kind of things he seemed to obsess about. the briefous gaffes, videotape. i thought it was a forward looking day for romney who took a lot of time outlining the plan. you have been talking about this. what is really going on with the president tonight? he seemed a little lethargic and slow. i think the word is malaise. this is a president who seems stuc

the second thing interesting about romney he's so insistently aggressive at debates. the moment i was reminded of they were talking about gun control in a debate against ted kennedy in massachusetts what they were competing for the senate seat. kennedy says i know about guns, referring to his family's tragedies. most candidates would withdraw and not go there. romney went there and said you always fall back on that. that's not going to work here. that's a pretty aggressive can n debater. >> woodruff: what does governor romney has to accomplish? >> he has to forget likeability. he will never compete on likeability-- >> woodruff: you said forget likeability? >> forget trying to be as likable as the president. that is not his forte. the president had great respect for john mccain. he didn't think he should be president, but he had great respect. he doesn't feel that way toward mitt romney. he has to-- mitt romney ought to be in with a little bit of confidence, judy, because the fact that he's had a terrible two weeks by a two to 1 margin polls people feel the information
